Research at Soft Matter Group

We use microgels as a model system for the phase behavior of soft colloids. For soft particles that can change shape and size in response to their einvironment, both the particle-internal and the colloidal degrees of freedom are relevant for their phase behavior. We study their structure as well as their phase behavior using scattering techniques (SANS, SAXS, DLS/SLS), confocal microscopy, and rheology.

In this project, we apply neutron reflectometry to investigate nanocomposite layers of various biomacromolecules at air/liquid and liquid/liquid interfaces. These layers are of considerable interest for food and drug design applications as well as for functional materials.

Colloidal nanocrystals are widely used in energy related applications. In collaboration with the group of Vanessa Wood (ETHZ) we use inelastic- and quasielastic neutron scattering in order to understand the dynamical processes at different levels and in different parts of these materials. These experiments are key part of the material development process of the ETHZ group.

ESTIA is the neutron reflectometer designed and built by PSI for the European Spallation Source, located in Lund, Sweden. ESTIA is designed for the characterization of small samples (area down to 1 mm²), covering a broad range of scientific subjects in condensed matter and magnetism, but also life science, soft condensed matter and surface chemistry.
